About
When I was growing up, I always knew why my friends wanted to come to my house on Friday afternoons. That was when my mom baked her famous mandelbread. Every family has its special food traditions. In my house, it was mandelbread, a traditional twice-baked Jewish cookie similar to biscotti.
During college, between my psychology classes and volunteer work with “Best Buddies,” a club to create friendships between college students and community members with disabilities, I continued my mom’s baking tradition. My college apartment soon became the busy Friday afternoon spot, as I tweaked her recipe - a little cinnamon here, a dash of salt there. And, of course, I shared my love of baking with my “Best Buddy,” Debbie.
Growing up with a cousin with a disability, I was acutely aware of how people with special needs were treated differently. It became my goal to work with this population through volunteering, job coaching, teaching cooking classes, and setting up students with internships.
Now, my dream is to combine my baking passion with my career experience to create a bakery that employs people with special needs.
I love to bake and have put a new and modern spin on this family favorite by incorporating the unexpected--sweet potatoes, chai espresso, lemon poppy, to name a few. My mandelbread is delicious, addicting, and the perfect gift for your friends, family, bridesmaids, teachers, and employees. With just one bite, you may be transported back in time as you remember your own family food traditions.
For now, I am selling mandelbread, or “stacks,” through this website and in pop-up shops. With every stack purchased, a portion of the proceeds will go toward supporting incredible local organizations focusing on disability inclusion.
When I’m not dreaming up new mandelbread flavors (birthday cake, anyone?), you can find me eating my way through New York City ice cream stores, running through Central Park, or watching Michigan football games.
